Expert in the Genomics Facility
The International Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology in Warsaw (IIMCB), Poland
invites applications for the position of Expert in the Genomics Facility.
Are you passionate about sequencing technologies and their development? Would you like to support cutting-edge research through hands-on work in an academic core facility?
The IIMCB is seeking an Expert in genomics to contribute to sequencing services and methodological development within the IN-MOL-CELL Infrastructure. The role combines hands-on laboratory work, scientific consultation, user training, and collaboration across core facilities.
The Genomics Facility provides sequencing-based services to internal researchers and external clients. Its current focus is Nanopore-based sequencing. Services cover experimental planning, sample coordination, nucleic acid quality control, library preparation, sequencing, and data processing and analysis.
The Expert will contribute to reliable sequencing workflows, advise users on experimental approaches, and help develop and implement new methods. The role centers on scientific and technical expertise and requires wet-lab work (approximately 50-70% of working time spent in the laboratory).
Key responsibilities
- Assume responsibility for defined sequencing service pipelines, seeking advice as necessary and ensuring timely delivery in accordance with established protocols.
- Discuss scientific questions, experimental design, sample requirements, and sequencing approaches with internal users and external clients.
- Perform nucleic acid isolation and quality control, library preparation, and Nanopore sequencing
- Process and review sequencing data, communicate results to users, and collaborate on downstream analysis.
- Assist with the design of new protocols and the implementation and validation of new techniques.
- Provide hands-on training in core technologies to researchers and core facility staff.
- Participate in preparing scientific documents, including protocols and publications
- Collaborate with other core facilities to support integrated experimental workflows.
- Maintain clear project records, quality-control documentation, and reproducible protocols.
- Keep abreast of technical and scientific developments in genomics and sequencing.
Necessary qualifications and skills
- PhD in Life Sciences or equivalent expertise gained through professional experience (at least 3 years of practical experience in sequencing)
- Extensive knowledge of a specialized genomics or sequencing technology, with a strong understanding of its applications and limitations.
- Hands-on experience in nucleic acid quality control, sequencing library preparation, and sequencing workflows; Nanopore sequencing experience is particularly relevant to the facility’s current focus, but not strictly required.
- Ability to discuss projects with users, communicate results clearly, and provide practical training.
- Good organizational skills, can-do attitude, a service-oriented approach, and the ability to collaborate across scientific and technical teams.
- Very good written and spoken English allowing for fluent communication with international users.
Candidates who do not meet all the criteria, but have experience in sequencing techniques are encouraged to apply, as opportunities at other position levels may be available.
Selection criteria
- Relevant scientific and technical expertise in genomics and sequencing.
- Communication skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts clearly and discuss project requirements and results with users.
- Ability to contribute to protocol development and new methodologies.
- Fluency in written and spoken English, enabling effective communication with international users and colleagues.
